Finally tidy up your keys. Magnetic key holder stylishly organises lots of keys without annoying hooks.

Key boards in various designs are used in many rooms of a house, flat or office, depending on the individual needs and room design. The classic: right next to the front door to have keys to hand when leaving or entering the house and the key parking space in the garage and workshop for car and workshop keys. The key board in the office and study for clearly organised storage of all keys for filing cabinets and lockers. Key management is also needed for storing keys for garden sheds or equipment.

A well-placed key board can be both functional, creating order, and an aesthetic highlight - perfect for organisation and decoration. A magnetic key holder can be made from a variety of materials: wood, slate or even concrete, depending on which design you prefer.

Jobina sent us her project of a magnetic key rack made from an old wooden board. The idea combines a modern, attractive and sustainable key rack made from a disused old wooden board. Up to 4 sets of keys fit on an approx. 50cm long wooden board. For even more bunches of keys, you can simply choose a larger board with more magnets. The strong magnets make it particularly functional, as it holds not only car keys and the like, but all metal objects.

Magnetic wooden key board

Material required

  • Wood board (I upcycle the slat of an old wooden pallet.)
  • 4 neodymium disc magnets for the key holders, e.g. MAG0092
  • 2 neodymium ring magnets for the wall mounting, e.g.e.g. MAG0095
  • 2 disc magnets as a counterpart for the wall mount, e.g. MAG0208
  • Optional 2 self-adhesive metal discs, MAG0520
  • UHU Max Repair adhesive
  • Wood varnish or oil (optional)

Tools

  • Sanding machine/sandpaper
  • Drill, e.g. with a Forstner bit.e.g. with a Forstner bit (22 mm in our example) or another wood or paring drill. It is important that the drill has the same diameter as the magnets to be used.

Instructions

1. Preparation

Wear safety goggles and gloves to protect yourself when working with the board and tools.

2. Positioning the magnets

Think about how many keys or key rings your wooden board should hold. Determine the corresponding positions and mark them with a pencil. Make sure there is enough space between the magnets so that they do not repel each other. In this example, a total of 6 magnets are used, 4 disc magnets for keys and 2 ring magnets for the later wall mount. For a stronger hold on the wall, 2 disc magnets with a smaller diameter should be selected instead of the two metal discs, e.g. disc magnet 3 mm diameter.

Determine and mark magnet positions in the key board

3. Drilling the holes

Using the Forstner bit (22 mm), carefully drill corresponding recesses for the key magnets at the marked points that are at least as deep as your selected disc magnets so that they are flush with the wooden surface. If the magnets are not flush in the drill hole, there will be an unsightly gap between the wall and the moulding. Also drill the recesses for attaching the board to the wall. This should be deep enough so that both the flat disc magnet and the ring magnet can be countersunk into the wall later. This gives you a floating design and a real eye-catcher in your home.

4. Sanding the surfaces

Sand the visible surfaces first with coarse and then fine-grained sandpaper. After removing the sanding dust, you can oil your board or colour, label and paint it as you wish

5. Inserting the magnets

Insert the disc magnets into the wooden board by gluing them in place.

6. Attaching the key rack to the wall

Determine the position of the key rack on your wall and attach an appropriate attachment/bracket. In our example, two neodymium disc magnets (MAG0095) were used, which in turn adhere to ring magnets (MAG0208) in the final attachment. The ring magnets are attached to the wall using screws. This holds the key board firmly to the wall and it

7. Finish

Check that the slat is firmly attached to the wall. Now hang up your keys and enjoy your home-made key rack made from an old batten. Of course, you can also choose a different material for your key holder. For a particularly attractive home accessory in the entrance area of your home, you can, for example, cover the key rack with leather or choose a more attractive material such as oak wood. If you hang the key holder with the short side on the wall, you also get a nice shelf on the top. The magnets are strong enough to hold the bunch of keys in place, so there are plenty of options for creating a particularly attractive eye-catcher for your keys in your hallway.
